All eyes on NY: Donate Now to Power Shift NY!

Stopping fracking in New York State has never been more important.  The fight against dirty energy locally is the fight for a stableclimate globally. If New York bans fracking, it will be a huge win for grassroots efforts everywhere.

Last April, Dr. Robert Howarth, a Cornell researcher, released a ground-breaking study which debunked the conventional wisdom than natural gas is the clean energy transition fuel.  Over a 20-year period, a scale that matters if we’re concerned about climate tipping points, methane is over 100 times worse than CO2 as a greenhouse gas.  Despite intense attacks from industry, Howarth is much more convinced than he was last April that shale gas is dangerous.

Thanks to Howarth’s latest research released in January, we now know that methane, primarily from the gas industry, contributes a whopping 44% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.- more than we ever thought before.  Building on the work of Dr. James Hansen of NASA, Howarth concludes that stopping fracking globally is one of most effective ways of preventing runaway climate change in the next 15-35 years.  The facts are clear: Shale gas will only exacerbate global warming and distract us from real solutions to the climate crisis.

Despite the overwhelming evidence of the destruction caused by fracking, which our friends in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Colorado have been forced to endure, Governor Cuomo is about to allow Big Oil and Gas to frack New York State.  Governor Cuomo claims that he will make objective decisions based on sound science, not the emotions of the masses, yet his administration ignores countless scientific studies that show how fracking will hurt the people of New York State.  We also now know that there is only 6 years worth of recoverable gas in the U.S., not the 100 years that Obama claimed in his State of the Union address.

The stakes have never been higher.  But there is also tremendous “opportunity to a create better world in the ashes of this one,” as Tim DeChristopher reminded us at Power Shift 2011.  As young people, we will have to deal with the consequences of the decisions made by those currently in power for the rest of our lives.  We’re not about to let natural gas companies devastate communities across New York for short-term profits, at the expense of our future.  By 2016, our generation will be the largest voting block by age in U.S. history- bigger than the baby boomers.  This April 27th-29th, Power Shift NY will give us the opportunity to harness our collective power and build a green economy from the grassroots up.

Will you donate $10, $25, $50, or $100 to support young leaders to stop fracking and to build a green economy?

Will you help us spread the word on Facebook?

At Power Shift NY, we’re offering some of the most innovative training in the climate movement from some of the strongest leaders in the fight for a just and sustainable future.  And more importantly, we’re taking bold action to tell Governor Cuomo that young people will not accept hydraulic fracturing in the future of our state.

Now is the time to stand up for a clean energy future.  Now is the time to show Governor Cuomo what we’re for, not just what we’re against.  Now is the time to come together united, Upstate and Downstate, to put an end to environmental injustices and to build a thriving green economy that works for everyone.

We’re launching a grassroots fundraising campaign to help make Power Shift NY a success.  We aim to raise a total of $3,000 to pay for the conference space rental at the Hotel Albany.  In addition, our registration fees will be used to pay for the training and program materials.

Yes, I’ll donate to support young leaders to stop fracking and to build a green economy!

Yes, I’ll join the Power Shift NY Facebook event to spread the word!

It’s time to rise up and stop Big Gas from trampling science and demand that our elected officials represent the 99%, rather than caving to the pressure of corporations.  Our right to a livable future is more important than the profits of Big Oil and Gas.  We need to ensure that Governor Cuomo knows this too, and remind him who he represents.  Will you help build this people-powered movement?

With Joy and Resolve,

The Green Umbrella Team
